This realistic story is about a boy, Jess Aarons who is in the fifth grade and loves to run. He dreams with beating everyone in school, but on the first day of school Leslie Burke crosses over to the boys' side where they are running and she beats all of them including Jess. Surprisingly Jess ends up befriending Leslie and they do everything together. Together they create "Terabithia" where they spend most of their free time together. One day, Jess goes with his teacher on a trip leaving Leslie behind because he didn't think about inviting her. He then feels guilty as Leslie dies on that day and realizes how important she was to him. He learns to deal with the death of his friend and his sister helps him. Jess finally realizes what he should do and takes his sister to Terabithia.
