Hicks,
F.E. (2013). The adventures of superhero
girl. Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse Books.
The Adventures of Superhero Girl follows the adventures
of twenty-something Superhero Girl who tries to juggle being a superhero with
being broke. She’s awkward at parties, and feels inferior to perfect big
brother Kevin. This is a collection of
comic strips. She really struggles with her everyday life in addition to
battling monsters and aliens.
I
loved the format of the book. The cover art was also beautifully-rendered and
suggested something quirky and fun. The
Adventures of Superhero Girl takes the type of real-life problems. This
graphic novel is based on today’s realities and from a female perspective, Superhero
Girl is a delightful young woman who wants to carve her own path. Although she
has a mysterious history, she comes from a family of superheroes. She is also
hassled by her arch-nemesis Shaun, the bizarre King Ninja and all sorts of
silly villains.
The
graphic novel has breathtaking images and few phrases. But the images are
enough to unravel the plot. The cartoon strips reveal the entire plot vividly.
I actually enjoyed the aspect of the cartoon strips. The images and characters
helped portray what was really occurring.
As a
future librarian, I would use this book as a read aloud story to my middle
school students ages 11 through 14. The students could analyze and foretell what
would happen next based on the comic strips, while practicing their inferencing
skills. If you like reading about The
Adventures of Superhero Girl, which consists of 106 colorful and fun pages,
perhaps you would enjoy reading, Who is
AC? written by Hope Larson.
