Rules by Cynthia Lord

Lord, C. (2006). Rules. New York, NY: Scholastic Inc.

This realistic fiction story is about twelve-year old Catherine who has an autistic brother named David. She teaches him rules on how to behave in public, at home, and anywhere David goes. She's always defending David. She makes a new friend at the clinic. His name is Jason and he's in a wheelchair and uses a board with words to communicate with the world. Catherine also befriends the new neighbor, Kristi and is invited to a school dance. Catherine tells Kristi about Jason, but she doesn't tell her about his illness. She has mixed feelings as she thinks she will not be accepted if she's seen with Jason, the same way she thinks she's not accepted because of her brother David. She blames the world for everything and in reality it is her that's having a hard time accepting her brother, Jason, and her attitude towards her life.
