This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen

Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Boston, MA: Candlewick Press.

In this story a fish has stolen a hat from a big fish. The small fish thinks he can swim away and not be found. He also believes that the owner will not notice that the hat is gone. He knows is wrong to keep the hat, but he wants it. The big fish is determined to find his hat.

This book could be used in a Kindergarten Reading Lesson to teach high frequency words and fluency: After reading the book have index cards ready and have the students copy all of the high frequency words from the book (with teacher's guidance) onto the index cards (teacher may write/copy words if preferred). Words like: this, is, not, my, hat, has, get, away, with, it, I, from, he, did, was, up, for, a, me, where, see, and does. The teacher may make a list of the high frequency words on the board and the student may copy them onto each index card (model). After all the words are written in the index cards have each child practice each word with you and with a partner too. Place the words (index cards) in a zip lock baggie and have the students practice the words for about 10 minutes the following day and so forth. The baggie serves for the student to continue adding new high frequency words that he may come across in other books.
